CODEBOOK
NOTES TO USERS OF THE 1971 EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES STUDY
A single codebook was created to match the data for all five countries
surveyed. The codebook was translated from the French and Belgian
questionnaires. Users who read the other languages may wish to request the
original language questionnaires in order to ascertain whether the question
wording is exactly comparable.
The data were received in OSIRIS format. The variable names appear in the
heading for each variable. In cases where the names differ, the non-conforming
names are noted next to the codes for that country. Please note that the files
are not all of the same length. In particular, several variables appear for
France that do not appear for the other countries. These variables occur at the
end of the French data file.
A card image version of the data was generated and deck and column numbers
are noted in the codebook.
The original documentation matched a pre-OSIRIS version of the data. In the
process of filebuilding codes for some variables were collapsed. The original
codes were not always updated. If the recoding of a variable was documented for
one country, the assumption was made that the same process occurred for the
other countries. This cannot be confirmed until we communicate with the
original investigator. There are also some variables for which we received no
documentation. Communication with the original investigator is necessary before
this can be recovered.
