1 Data Download

The cleaned, de-identified datasets from the NetSense study are available for open academic research. All files have been programmatically scrubbed of sensitive personal identifiers (including student names, email addresses, NetIDs, and raw telephone numbers).


1.1 Longitudinal Social Network Surveys

Longitudinal panel tracking dyadic nominations between students across Waves 1–8 (\(N = 11,818\) nominations). Includes subjective closeness, relationship duration, tie categories, contact frequencies, and emotional profiles.

1.2 Perceived Alter-to-Alter Network Ties

Dyadic edge list capturing all perceived acquaintance ties between nominated alters within each participant’s personal network across Waves 1–5, 7, and 8 (\(N = 29,473\) perceived ties).

NoteWave 6 Survey Design

Perceived alter-to-alter tie data was deliberately omitted from the Wave 6 (Summer 2013) survey instrument to reduce respondent burden during summer break. Full alter-to-alter batteries were reinstated in Waves 7 and 8.

Longitudinal summary panel (\(N = 804\) ego-waves) tracking personal network size (\(k\)), potential alter pairs (\(\binom{k}{2}\)), reported ties, and personal network density / local clustering coefficients.

Wide individual-level panel (\(N = 203\) students, 1,556 variables) tracking demographic backgrounds, Big Five personality inventories, GPAs, lifestyles, sleep habits, musical tastes, and activities across Waves 1–6.

1.6 Longitudinal Communication Ego Networks (Calls & SMS)

De-identified dyadic communication panel tracking phone calls and text messages across 158 continuous academic weeks (2011–2014, \(N = 383,895\) dyad-week interaction records). Captures communication volumes with both enrolled study peers and outside alters (family, high school friends, etc.) using consistent, irreversible salted pseudonyms.

1.7 Longitudinal Email Ego Networks

De-identified longitudinal email interaction panel tracking sent and received emails across 158 study weeks (\(N = 676,717\) dyad-week interaction records from over 1 million parsed emails). Email addresses are completely pseudonymized via salted cryptographic hashes and classified into Notre Dame peer/individual, personal webmail, campus listservs, and automated commercial notifications.

1.8 Address Book Ego Networks & Contact Dynamics

Standardized longitudinal datasets derived from periodic smartphone address book snapshots (Weeks 37 to 192, spanning 2012–2015). Tracks address book size, contact acquisition rates, and dyadic retention.

Dyadic Saved-Contacts Roster:

Dyadic panel (\(N = 30,802\) saved ego-alter pairs) tracking every person saved in participants’ phone address books, their earliest observed week, last observed week, and total weeks retained in the phone. Fully cross-referenced with communication alter pseudonyms.

Longitudinal summary metrics (\(N = 6,384\) ego-weeks) tracking total address book size (total_contacts_in_phone), number of enrolled study peers saved (study_peers_saved), outside contacts saved (external_contacts_saved), and rate of adding new contacts (new_contacts_added).

1.9 Academic Performance & Classroom Co-Enrollment Networks

Official registrar academic performance records, term-by-term GPAs, and shared classroom course co-enrollment dyads across participants’ four-year college trajectories (2011–2015).

Longitudinal course enrollment records (\(N = 5,779\)) tracking semester course enrollments, course reference numbers (CRNs), official registrar letter grades, numeric grade points (4.0 scale), and AP/transfer credit flags across freshman through senior years.

1.10 Longitudinal Spatial Mobility & Campus Zones

De-identified longitudinal spatial mobility and campus zone panels (\(N = 16,144\) ego-weeks across 188 students) extracted from over 11.5 million passive location fixes across study weeks 7 to 192 (2011–2015). Raw coordinates are completely scrubbed and converted into weekly mobility indicators and coarse categorical zone distributions.

Longitudinal panel tracking weekly radius of gyration (\(r_g\) in km), spatial mobility entropy (bits), normalized entropy (\(0.0\) to \(1.0\)), time on Notre Dame campus percentage, distinct locations visited count, and peak distance from campus.

Aggregated undirected weekly contact networks (\(N = 267,629\) dyad-weeks) based on over 10.9 million high-resolution Bluetooth proximity pings across academic weeks 8 through 191 (spanning all four undergraduate years: 2011–2015).
